Location
The West Arms is located in the small village of Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog. As a matter of fact, the drive through the picturesque Ceiriog valley is a wonderful experience in itself. When you reach the historic hotel, you’ll immediately know that you’re in for a truly Welsh experience. Not only will you be staying in a both unique and historic hotel but you’ll also be surrounded by some of the best views in Britain.
Check In
When you enter the building you’ll be pleased to know the historic theme continues. One of the most striking parts of the interior are the exposed beams. On arrival, friendly staff will welcome you to the property and check you into your room. If you have any questions about the surrounding area such as walks or scenic viewpoints, the staff will be keen to chat with you.

The Howard Room
My favorite room is the Howard Room which features an antique 4 poster bed. Although you’ll be sleeping in an antique bed in a 450 year old building, there is access to fast WiFi as well as flat screen satellite TV.
Eagles Room
All rooms are spacious and have a homely feel. I especially like the exposed beams which maintain the historic feel of the hotel.
Willow Suite
The suites offer guests an extra lounge area to enjoy. As I mentioned, The West Arms is a dog friendly hotel in North Wales. For this reason, you may require the extra space a suite offers. Another reason to upgrade to a suite is if you’re traveling with children.
En Suite

Pub
The onsite pub features a wide variety of drinks. For beer drinkers, I recommend the Big Hand Brewery selection of beers, from a microbrewery based in nearby Wrexham. Have you tried a Welsh beer before? Alternatively, there’s also a wide selection of international beers. There’s also a large selection of wines and spirits to choose from. Finally, if gin is your tipple, you’re in for a treat!
Gin Bar
The West Arms has a large selection of gins. For this reason, gin drinkers will be more than satisfied at the bar. In addition to the large selection of gins, there’s also a large selection of gin mixers. Most importantly, the bar staff know exactly how to prepare the gin.
Restaurant
Firstly, The West Arms restaurant has featured in the Good Food Guide every year for over a decade. This fact alone should be enough for you to reserve a table. As you would imagine, the meat and veg is locally sourced. Most importantly, the chef prepares the fresh ingredients to perfection.
Welsh Lamb
Welsh lamb is the best you can buy in the UK and arguably the world. The lamb at the West Arms is organically reared by Mike Crawshaw on his farm adjacent to the hotel. I was lucky enough to be shown around the farm by Mike himself. I would strongly recommend you choose his lamb from the menu as you won’t be disappointed!
Beer Garden
On a lovely day, you can sit out in the beer garden, relax and enjoy the views. Something else you can enjoy in the beer garden is the fresh air, even more so for those escaping the city. I highly recommend the beer garden around sunset.
Fireplace
The fireplace can be the cosiest place in the world if you’re visiting North Wales during the winter. There’s something magical about sitting in a historic building in front of a fireplace. What’s more, the staff will always keep the fire burning for you!
Complimentary Breakfast + Buffet
Breakfast at The West Arms is a real treat. As well as a buffet, you’re served a freshly prepared breakfast dish of your choice. You may choose from a full Welsh breakfast, smoked haddock, porridge or toasted blini with smoked salmon. In addition, toast is freshly prepared and brought to your table. When you’re being served your fresh organic eggs, it’s worth asking the server where they come from. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the answer!
Things to do in North Wales – Surrounding The West Arms
Firstly, you can take short walks on the paths which surround the property. Simply ask the staff and they’ll be happy to explain the various walking routes, both for short and long walks.
Pheasant Shooting in North Wales
The immediate surroundings are some of the best in the UK for pheasant shooting. The pheasants fly high from the steep woods, as a result it’s a challenging shoot. Locally sourced pheasant is also on the menu at The West Arms.
Chirk Aqueduct – UNESCO Site
The Chirk Aqueduct crosses the Ceiriog Valley. Furthermore, this is in fact the border crossing between England and Wales. A stunning site in itself, it’s also been awarded UNESCO world heritage status. Both trains and canal boats regularly cross here. Don’t miss the ‘Welcome to England’ and ‘Welcome to Wales’ signs at either end.
Chirk Tunnel
Adjacent to Chirk Aqueduct is the Chirk Tunnel. The tunnel is over 400 meters long as well as extremely dark and narrow. Dare you walk through it?
Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall
Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall is the tallest waterfall in Wales. Additionally, it’s only 6 miles from The West Arms. Do you remember the Timotei advert from the 80’s? This famous advert was filmed at the Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall. Lastly, the falls are one of the seven wonders of Wales.
Llangollen
A trip to Llangollen is a must. Throughout the town are several beautiful buildings and viewpoints. Famous landmarks in Llangollen include the historic railway, Horseshoes Falls and The Ladies of Llangollen building. As a matter of fact, the bridge of Llangollen is one of the seven wonders of Wales.
