Sunrise / Sunset Location

Sunrise / Sunset location in Goreme Turkey

There is no substitute for a once in a lifetime hot air balloon ride over Goreme Turkey.  But, if there was it would be viewing the hot air balloons at sunrise.  Here is the exact sunrise point location, it’s a short uphill walk from the town.  What’s more, even at sunset without the balloons this is still a worthwhile viewpoint to visit.

Goreme Turkey Panorama

Goreme Panorama - Cappadocia

An alternate sunset location is from the top of a huge rock overlooking Goreme Turkey.  However, this is a little far to walk therefore you must have your own transport.  Alternatively, you must be fit enough for a long walk.  What’s good about this location is you have a 360 degree panoramic view over Cappadocia.  Lastly, here is the exact location.

Hike Through the Chimneys

Hiking in Cappadocia

You’re free to walk wherever you want through Cappadocia.  Both photographers as well as explorers can use this to their advantage and visit lesser visited parts of the rock formations.  Moreover, most tourists stay close to the locations I mentioned above therefore anywhere else is usually empty.

Derinkuyu Underground City

Underground City Day Trip

Once upon a time Genghis Khan passed through these lands.  One place you didn’t want to be was in his path.  For this reason, 20,000 people lived in an underground city well out of his way.  Read about my day trip to the deepest Cappadocia underground city.

Ilhara Valley

Ilhara Valley, Goreme Turkey

The Ilhara Valley features the huge Ilhara Gorge which is open for hiking.  As a matter of fact, there are marked trails through it.  In addition, a small river also runs through it.

Mount Erciyes Stratovolcano

Mount Erciyes Stratovolcano

When you think of Cappadocia and Goreme Turkey, the last thing that comes to mind is snow and a stratovolcano.  However, Mount Erciyes is a huge stratovolcano which stands almost 4000 meters tall.  As a result it’s the tallest mountain in the region and the fifth tallest in Turkey.  Can you hike this mountain?

Pose For Pictures on a Rooftop Balcony

Rooftop Balcony in Goreme Turkey, Cappadocia

The famous Instagram spot in Goreme Turkey is posing on a rooftop balcony with the balloons in the background.  As a result, there are several hotels which feature such a rooftop.  One I can recommend is the Divan Cave House.

How to get from Goreme to Gaziantep

From Goreme I chose to head east to Gaziantep.  However, you should also consider visiting Adana as there’s a stunning riverside mosque there.  Firstly, you can buy a ticket to several destinations from Goreme bus station.  These tickets usually include a shared minibus to Nevşehir bus station as well as an onward ticket to your next destination.  The most popular destinations are of course, Ankara and Konya.  Travel time to Gaziantep is around 8 hours and the luxury buses include free snacks and coffee.
