Trekking in winter is such an adventurous activity, and I had a memorable experience on my first winter trek to Brahmatal.
Seeing a canvas of snow-covered mountains and watching videos of snow trails and Himalayan landscapes can be good, but experiencing all this is completely different.
Spending days on snowy trails, enjoying mountain camping in lower temperatures, and attempting the beautiful summit climb was really full of exciting experiences that were truly unforgettable experiences.
I completed my first winter trek, the Brahmatal Trek, last winter with Manchala Mushafir’s Brahmatal Trek Package, a popular winter trail in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and Himalayan vistas, it attracts many trekkers across the country.
It allows you to enjoy a different side of the mountains in winter with magical snowfall. I was excited but a little nervous too because it was my first winter trek. Yet I knew that trekking in winter would be different, and I was ready to discover something new that I had never tried.
I would like to share with you my first winter trekking experience on the famous Brahmatal trek, which really turned into the most memorable adventure of my life, filled with new friendships, learnings, and new experiences.
Beginning Of Journey: From City to Mountain
Leaving behind a chaotic routine life, I headed to the peaceful mountain roads of Uttarakhand. During this road journey to Base Lohajung village, I witnessed dramatic landscapes and peaceful villages.
I reached the base village, and I met two other participants who were also sharing the same experience, and a trek leader. I checked into camp and rested overnight.
The next day, after receiving safety instructions from our trek leader and after arranging backpacks, we started the trek.
The weather was cold, and the temperature dropped significantly, which reminded me that it was not going to be an ordinary hiking experience.
Walking on Snow-covered Trails

The actual adventure began when we started walking towards higher camps. The trail passed through dense oak and rhododendron forests. Beautiful surroundings, fresh air, and a peaceful environment.
As we gained altitude, snow-covered patches seemed challenging, but the stamina I had helped me a lot. Every step and turn on the trail offered stunning views of peaks and surroundings. Sometimes the path felt challenging and tiring, but my fellow trekkers and the beauty of the trek kept me motivated.
Highlights of Brahmatal Trek
Camping at the alpine glacial lakes Bekal Tal and Brahmatal Lake was the most highlighted part of my trip. The charm of the surrounding area was unforgettable, and spending time there gave me a deeper sense of peace.
I captured some beautiful moments there and appreciated being in the mountains. Heard the tale about the site, associated with Hindu legend. Believed to be a place where Lord Brahma meditated, it adds a cultural dimension to its natural beauty.
The night sky filled with stars looks amazing. Spending the night and sleeping in a tent is not comfortable, but suitable preparation, such as sleeping bags and a mattress, made a big difference.
Witnesses Final Summit Push

The next morning, our group headed towards the Brahmatal summit; the route offered great views of major peaks like Mt. Trishul and Nanda Ghunti. A combination of open, wide meadows, snow-covered ridges, and peaks, along with a beautiful sunrise, made all the effort worthwhile.
Reaching the summit gave me a sense of accomplishment and taught me that enjoying every small moment of the journey is more important than simply reaching the destination. Listening to your guide/trek leader and respecting their decision is crucial, especially when you are new on mountain trails.
Learning From My First Winter Trek
- Walk at your own pace instead of chasing someone’s pace
- Pack only what you need during the trek or trip.
- Stay hydrated on high-altitude mountain trails
- Small things can give you joyful memories
Is Brahmatal Trek really a good choice for first-time winter trekkers?
Personally, I would definitely say that the Brahmatal Trek is absolutely worth visiting for beginners with a decent fitness level who want to experience an alpine ridge walk in the Himalayas.
But beginners should not treat it as an easy walking trail, especially in winter; they must understand the itinerary, trail conditions, accommodation arrangements, and other requirements.
And most importantly, the best time to visit is December to March for a guaranteed snowfall experience.
Final Thought
So yeah, in the end, I would say that my First winter trek to Brahmatal is much more than just a mountain adventure. My learnings from this adventure are patience and my improved confidence & stamina.
Although it was challenging at times, it gave me unforgettable memories of beautiful summit views and peaceful campsites, making all my efforts worthwhile.
Honestly, I can say that Brahmatal can be a really good choice that must be undertaken with proper preparation and realistic planning. It is advisable to check the current weather forecast and accessibility before travel.
